Wiggle man gingerbread seller, Christian Ulbricht from Seiffen in the Erzgebirge
At the first Christmas markets that took place, mainly toys and sweets were offered. A tradition were also so-called flying merchants, who sold their goods in a vendor's tray. This custom is rarely seen today. In the toy village of Seiffen in the Ore Mountains, children transform themselves into "Striezel children" during the Christmas season, as the little traders were called in the aisles at the Striezelmarkt and sell genuine Ore Mountain crafts. The motif of the vendor in a hawker's tray with a wide variety of goods is popularly depicted in Ore Mountain folk art. For example, the Christian Ulbricht company from Seiffen has included the little gingerbread vendor in its product range.
Funny nodders from Christian Ulbricht
The nodder gingerbread salesman belongs to a whole series of nodders, which have also become a collector's item due to their funny appearance. The figures got their name because of their unsteady stand, whereby the males move gently back and forth by lightly nudging. The body of the gingerbread seller is turned from local wood, the various accessories made of different materials. In the small wooden vendor's tray you can find gingerbread man and an appetizing red apple. Moreover, the vendor's tray is decorated in the front with appliqués with typical cookie shapes. It seems to be very cold in the alleys of the Christmas market, because the manikin already has a quite red nose and red cheeks. The cheerful face is painted by hand. On the head sits a warm pom-pom hat, under which the brown hair looks out.
